Host Like a (Busy) Pro
A Summer Fête to Remember
I’m an ambivert—equal parts social butterfly and solo recharger. I love gathering with people I care about, but I need a good dose of alone time to recover (just ask my husband—thanks for enduring my silent mornings, babe!).
Since moving out of the city, most of our gatherings have been small and cozy. The last time we hosted a crowd was for our daughter’s second birthday—25 friends, family members, and toddlers in a swirl of joyful chaos. It was wonderful… but I’ll admit, I was absolutely spent afterward.
So, when it came time to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Three Birch Hill’s online shop, I envisioned something different. Kid-friendly, of course—that’s who we are—but with a refined ease that felt festive, elevated, and reflective of the season.
Here’s how I made hosting feel more joyful than draining—even with a busy schedule and a business to run.
6 Tips for Hosting When You're a Busy, Social-But-Not-Too-Social Mom
1. Edit Your Invite (Yes, You Can Add an End Time!)
I first heard this genius idea on We Can Do Hard Things, and honestly, it was a game-changer. Adding an end time to your invite lets you enjoy your guests and your evening wind-down—without feeling rude.
2. Pick a Theme (It Makes Everything Easier)
I used to think themes felt overdone, but this time, it helped guide the menu, décor, and even our outfits. We went with “Summer Fête”—a blend of picnic charm and relaxed elegance. Everyone loved it.
3. Create a Schedule (Thanks, ChatGPT)
A bit controversial (trust me, I use it sparingly!), but with a little help from AI, I created a prep schedule covering shopping, cooking, and setup. As a checklist person, this structure made a huge difference. I felt confident instead of scattered.
4. Keep Decor Effortless
Summer blooms in all colors were the stars, styled against a neutral base of wood and white. And the highlight? Our cast-stone candleholders—designed in-house and styled with alternating blue tapers and flower-stuffed vases. They brought a romantic, lived-in elegance to the table.
5. Ask for Help (It's Worth It)
I handled the food and drinks but brought in support where I needed it most. Tania of Une Table set the most stunning scene, and Nina Pali Photography captured the heart of the day. Could I have done it all solo? Maybe. But would I have enjoyed it as much? Definitely not.
6. Exit the Kitchen
I designed a make-ahead menu so everything was prepped before guests arrived. That meant I got to actually be at the party—connecting, laughing, and celebrating with the people who’ve supported me and this brand from day one.
Celebrating this milestone with our community—friends, clients, collaborators—was deeply special. I’m so grateful to each of you who’ve followed along on this journey.
So tell me—what are you celebrating this season? Are you hosting, attending, or just soaking it all in? Either way, I hope your summer table is joyful, effortless, and filled with beauty.
