Setting Up a Home Together:

Art as the Heart of a New Beginning

There are few things more exciting than starting a new chapter together—moving in with your partner, planning a future, and making a space your own. Whether you're newly engaged, cohabiting for the first time, or just finding your shared rhythm in life, designing a home together is deeply personal and full of promise.

As an architectural + interior designer, I consider it a privilege to be part of that journey—to help shape the spaces where your story unfolds. For me, art is the connective tissue of a home. It brings a space to life, reflects your shared tastes, and can even inspire the design direction for entire rooms—or the whole home.

Designing for Real Life (and Love)

When I begin working with clients, especially couples combining lives and styles, I always start by asking a few key questions:

  • Program: How do you plan to use each space? Will this be a room for entertaining, relaxing, working, or unwinding together after a long day?

  • Circulation: How do you move through the space? Are there areas that need better flow, more openness, or clear zones for different functions?

  • Views: What do you want to see when you pause in a room? From your morning coffee corner to your evening wind-down nook, what visual moments will make you feel grounded and inspired?

These questions help us shape a home that feels intuitive, elegant, and uniquely yours.

Let Art Lead the Way

Art is often my starting point when designing a space. It’s more than décor—it’s mood-setting, meaning-making, and deeply personal. I love using artwork to build a color palette or define the emotional tone of a room. Are you drawn to airy, light-filled spaces with soft neutrals and natural textures? Or are you craving something more mysterious, moody, and cocooning?

One of my favorite things to play with is scale. A single large-scale artwork can anchor a room and make a bold statement. But don’t underestimate the power of negative space. A small, thoughtfully chosen piece—surrounded by generous white space—can become a focal point all its own, imbued with intimacy and presence.

Curating Your Shared Story

When you choose pieces for your home, you’re also choosing how you want to live—what you'll wake up to, what you’ll walk past each day, and what will greet your guests. Whether it’s a limited edition fine art print, a sculptural object, or a statement candleholder, these items do more than fill shelves and walls. They help tell your story.

If you’re in the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) phase of setting up a home together, let your shared aesthetic grow out of what moves you. Art is a beautiful place to begin.
